Position Overview

The Tikvah Director at Camp Ramah in California oversees all aspects of our Tikvah program, which includes:

  • Amitzim, the residential program at our summer camp for campers with disabilities (15-25 campers per session)
  • Ezra, the residential vocational-education program at our summer camp for young adults with disabilities (8-15 participants per session)
  • Ezra reunion Shabbaton
  • Ohr Lanu Family Camp (annual Shabbaton)

Through these programs we offer a Jewish camping experience for children and young adults ages 10+ with a wide range of disabilities, including but not limited to developmental and intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, and neurological impairments.

Additionally, the Tikvah Director works closely with the Director of Camper Care and Staff Wellness and the rest of the summer program team to provide expertise and perspective on matters of inclusion.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Passion for Jewish summer camping
  • Strong programming, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Significant experience working with individuals with disabilities, and within Jewish educational settings
  • Ability to train, motivate, support, share insights and ideas with, and supervise staff.
  • Outstanding ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Integrity, patience, adaptability, sense of humor, enthusiasm, and a commitment to serve Jewish youth.
  • Knowledge of Jewish culture, history, and values. Familiarity with Hebrew is preferred.
  • Master’s or PhD in psychology, education, social work, special needs, or related fields.

Primary Roles and Responsibilities

Camper Recruitment & Retention

  • Manage the Tikvah recruitment process, helping to bring in new campers, staff, and families to our Tikvah program.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with agencies, synagogues, and schools to connect with new Tikvah campers.
  • Build relationships with families throughout our catchment area.
  • Develop and disseminate communication materials to promote the Tikvah program.
  • Recruit new families to the Ohr Lanu Family Camp.

Camper Registration

  • Field calls and inquiries from prospective families.
  • Actively assist families with the registration process and be the main point of contact for all materials relating to parent communication (pre-camp and during the camp session)
  • Conduct new camper intake, including interviews with parents & prospective campers, communicate with teachers and therapists, review IEPs to determine if our program will be the right fit for the individual child
  • Partner with Camper Care and Staff Wellness Director on intake calls as needed

Camper Care

  • Work with parents, camp counselors, and medical staff to support the unique needs of our Tikvah campers
  • Develop individualized care plans for campers including specific strategies for success based on camper screening and/or experience from prior summers at camp
  • Direct contact for all parent communication before, during, and after camp

Ongoing Program Design

  • In partnership with the Camp Director and Director of Camper Care and Staff Wellness, develop a vision for the Tikvah Program, one which features an experience promoting social and spiritual development and fostering independent living skills/vocational skills as a fully integrated part of the camp community
  • Stay up to date in the latest programmatic supports for campers with disabilities
  • Collaborate with the Director of Camper Care and Staff Wellness on the continued development of the Kesher inclusion program
  • Design and implement both the Ohr Lanu Family Camp and the Ezra reunion

Staff Recruitment, Training & Supervision

  • Recruit and interview potential Tikvah staff members
  • Design and implement a staff-training program for counselors at all levels of our Tikvah programs
  • Serve as a supervisor and mentor for the Rosh Edah (Division head) of the Amitzim edah and Ezra Staff
  • Work in partnership with Camp Director and Director of Camper Care and Staff Wellness to design and implement staff training modules for the full summer staff community


  • Work closely with the Executive Director and the Development Director to solicit new and continuing support for the Tikvah program
  • Contribute to the preparation and reporting of grants to support the Tikvah program

Active participation as part of the National Ramah Tikvah Network, including but not limited to occasional in-person director meetings, monthly phone conferences, and recruiting staff to attend training workshops.

Job requirements:

  • During the year: Occasional travel as well as occasional work on nights and weekends.
  • During the summer: Residency of approximately 10 weeks at Ramah’s campus in Ojai, CA.


This position is part time from fall through spring (15 hours/week) and full time in the summer. Compensation is $30-$45/hour from fall through spring, commensurate with experience, and $10,000-

$15,000 for the summer.

Camp Ramah is an American Camp Association accredited, coeducational, residential summer camp affiliated with the Conservative Movement and National Ramah Commission and operates under the educational auspices of the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies at American Jewish University.


Camp Ramah in California is headquartered in Encino, CA where we have our administrative office and on over 400 acres in Ojai, CA, where our residential summer camp has operated for nearly seventy years. We maintain a hybrid office schedule. Please note that being authorized to work in the U.S. is a precondition of employment.
