Director of the Sinai Temple Mental Health Center

Houses of worship are often the first place people will go when struggling with mental health and mental illness. Sinai Temple is seeking a Director of our newly launched, Sinai Temple Mental Health Center to help grow an infrastructure for sound mental health within our synagogue and schools, provide consult for our clergy, create a safe environment for Sinai Temple members to explore mental health challenges, at all stages of life and alleviate the stigma of mental health within the synagogue.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Provider and/or organizer/facilitator of ongoing psychoeducation for Sinai Temple community (psychoeducation will include but not limited to: destigmatizing mental health, coping strategies for anxiety, psychological aspects of aging, bullying, self-esteem and resilience, living with mental illness, bereavement and grief, etc.)
  • Creation of partnerships with local and national mental health organizations, identifying relevant resources and programs for congregation
  • Creation of monthly newsletter, highlighting ongoing mental health programs at Sinai Temple and in greater community
  • Establishment of strong referral system to help congregants receive necessary help to manage mental health
  • Creation and Facilitation of Covid-Reentry Groups
  • Establishment of Bereavement and Couples Groups (potentially through outside organization)
  • Provides consultation and support to Sinai Temple clergy and staff
  • Provides initial consult with Sinai Temple members before referral
  • Ready to innovate mental health initiatives within Sinai Temple and beyond

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Clinical Psychologist, LMFT, LCSW preferred, licensed in California
  • Minimum 3-5 years post-licensure experience in the mental health field
  • Knowledgeable about Judaism and associated traditions
  • Experienced in initial assessment and referral (warm hand off)
  • Aware of community referrals/resources or able to work to develop strong resources and connections in the community
  • Experienced in grief counseling
  • Experienced in group process and in leading and/or co-leading support groups
  • Has teaching and presentation experience
  • Experienced as a supervisor or has ability to help with conflict resolution, countertransference issues, vicarious trauma (to assist and support rabbis)
  • Must carry own professional liability insurance

Salary Range:

  • $75-80k
