Camp Ramah in Northern California (also known as Ramah Galim, “Ramah of the Waves”) is an innovative Jewish summer camp located along the beautiful shores of Monterey Bay, California. Ramah Galim offers an overnight camp experience that combines the excitement of specialty programming in ocean exploration, performing arts, and adventure sports with the cherished traditions, nurturing environment, and community-building of a traditional Ramah Camp.

Position Purpose: The Rosh Etgar (Adventure Sports Specialty Track Director) possesses previous experience in biking, rock climbing, hiking and wilderness skills, and is responsible for overseeing the program development, educational vision, logistics, safety, and staff for the Adventure Sports specialty track and offsite trip planning. The Rosh Etgar is a member of the camp senior leadership team (Hanhallah).

NON-SUMMER DUTIES  (10 hrs/week)

  • Develop new four-week Bike Intensive program in partnership with Camp Directors and Business Manager, including curriculum development, Jewish content integration, facility use plan, and equipment purchasing
  • Participate in Foundation for Jewish Camp’s trainings and coaching sessions as part of the development of the Bike Intensive
  • Plan offsite trips (masaot), book campsites and outside vendors for all three specialty tracks in consultation with Camp Directors
  • Arrange transportation, travel, and logistics prior to the summer for staff and camper travel to camp as well as offsite trips under the direction of the Business Manager
  • Develop targeted recruitment and marketing efforts for specialty programs and intensives through the implementation of a marketing plan, creation of marketing materials and participation in recruitment events with prospective families
  • Lead year round in-person and/or virtual programs for camper populations as part of our year round engagement and teen initiative
  • Plan summer Adventure Sports (Etgar) program and integration of different sub-program areas (rock climbing, horseback riding, outdoor skills, and biking) and intensives
  • Design staff training and accompanying materials for Adventure Sports staff and staff going on offsite trips (masaot)

SUMMER DUTIES  (full time seasonal during summer)

  • Deliver a fun and engaging program to campers
    • Write lesson plans that meet camp outcomes and the abilities of the campers
    • Evaluate the success of programs and the development of the campers’ abilities and skills
    • Expand the camp’s activities with new games and initiatives
  • Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures
    • Develop and facilitate the implementation of staff training
    • Supervise, support and evaluate summer adventure sports staff
    • Ensure campers and staff follow safety procedures
  • Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment
    • Conduct daily check of program area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair
    • Maintain equipment and elements

Other Job Duties:

  • Be an active member of the senior leadership team (Hanhallah) at camp
    • Attend and participate in staff meetings, senior staff meetings, and trainings
    • Actively participate in camp events and Jewish life at camp, leading educational sessions and other activities as schedule permits
    • Be a dugma (role model) and supportive presence for other members of the camp community
    • Undertake other tasks as needed (such as driving, set up, or leading a group activity) as a senior member of camp

Equipment Used: may include but not limited to bicycles, climbing equipment, farming equipment and tools, horseback riding equipment, camping/outdoor equipment, rock climbing wall and safety gear, mountain bikes and associated safety gear

Qualifications: (Minimum Education and Experience)

  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age or College Graduate
  • Current certification or documented experience in adventure sports activities
  • Must be able to obtain or become certified in First Aid/CPR (WFR Highly Desirable)
  • Bike handling and bike maintenance experience
  • Knowledge of Hebrew and competency in Jewish education
  • Must submit health history record, vaccination records,  and examination form prior to first day of work
  • Ability to interact with all age levels
  • Must be able to pass a background check as required by the state of California

Physical Aspects of the Job: Might include endurance such as climbing, standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate adventure sports equipment and adventure sports activities. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/ programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering programs in the facility available. Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat working up to 54 hours per week or 6 days per week. Rosh Etgar must live on site during the summer season and may be housed in rooms with communal bathrooms.
