THE PROGRAM

BaMidbar Wilderness Therapy promotes whole-health wellness in the Jewish community by elevating the conversation around mental health and providing wilderness-based journeys of self-discovery, hope, and healing. BaMidbar hosts three core programs: 4-week therapeutic expeditions for Jewish young adults (18-28 year olds); 4-week adventure and wellness programming for adolescents (15-17 year olds), and an experiential educator course. All of our core programs use nature and adventure-based experiences as part of a therapeutic process that promotes emotional, physical, and spiritual wellness; use Jewish metaphor and storytelling to build personal as
well as Jewish identity and values; support individuals in building strong and healthy relationships; and, increase open dialogue around mental health and addiction in the Jewish community.

Position Type: Full-time, seasonal
Season: March 1, 2020 to September 15, 2020
Reports To: Program Director
Schedule: 8 days on, 6 days off
Compensation: $3000-3200/month DOE
Location: Ramah in the Rockies Ranch

POSITION PURPOSE: The role of the Field Coordinator is to oversee logistics of field groups in accordance with BaMidbar’s guidelines and strengths-based program philosophy. The Coordinator will mentor field staff and support their personal and professional development, and promote a culture of safety in all aspects of programming.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Logistics:
● Oversee tracking and management of food, gear, equipment, facilities, and vehicles, including:
○ Organize and oversee BaMidbar’s maintenance and storage systems
○ Maintain accurate inventory of equipment, gear, and food, and facilitate distribution to groups,
including weekly food resupply
○ Complete gear and equipment maintenance and purchasing
○ Oversee fleet management for BaMidbar vehicles
○ Create and improve organizational systems for logistics management
○ Assist Ramah in the Rockies ranch manager with facility maintenance, as needed
● Provide in-field support for groups, including delivery of water and supplies
● Transport students and staff to and from the field as needed
● Support primitive and technical skill training for field staff
● Substitute for field staff as needed
● Support processing and filing of student paperwork, therapy assignments, correspondence, outcome measures, and field pictures

Risk Management:
● While on shift, participate in on-call system to support group emergency needs
● Provide general risk management oversight and communicate risk management issues with field staff and program director

Programming & Staff Support:
● Complete weekly debriefs and check-in’s with fields taff
● Support field programming on Fridays and Saturdays, including:

Field Coordinator

POSITION DESCRIPTION
○ Half day art, farm, or service project activities
○ Half day Shabbat food preparation and food education
○ Full day in field on Shabbat
● Support development and logistics of Shabbat and holiday programming
● Support implementation of Shabbat and holiday programming

QUALIFICATIONS

Education / Experience
● Must be 25 years of age or older
● Bachelor’s degree, preferably focused in outdoor education, psychology, sociology, child development, or education. Educational requirements may be substituted with relevant professional experience
● 3-4 years in wilderness therapy and/or outdoor education
● Current Wilderness First Responder certification required, (W)EMT certification preferred
● Experience working with young adults, preferably in a leadership, mentoring, or instructional capacity
● Significant backcountry trip leading experience, preferably in wilderness therapy

Skills / Knowledge
● Exemplary organizational skills
● Advanced skill level in all or most of the following: wilderness travel, land navigation, primitive living, backcountry camping
● Excellent mentoring and coaching skills
● Excellent group facilitation skills
● Open, inclusive, and team-oriented work style
● Understanding of Jewish culture, values and cycles, and if not fully understood, a willingness to learn and an appreciation for the cultural aspects of the program

Other Considerations
● The essential functions of this position require outdoor work in all weather conditions, including work in sub-zero temperatures
● Employee will be expected to hike on uneven terrain, while carrying a backpack or other equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
● A pre-employment background check will be required, including fingerprinting and FBI background check
● Applicants must have a valid driver’s license, with an insurable driving record

LOCATION
BaMidbar Wilderness Therapy is based at Ramah in the Rockies, a 360-acre ranch nestled in the pristine Pike and San Isabel National Forests. Ramah in the Rockies is 90 minutes from Denver, at an elevation of 8,000 feet. At BaMidbar, students spend four days per week on expeditions, exploring the public lands of Colorado. They will spend the remaining three days at our basecamp in the Rocky Mountains, visiting with therapists and celebrating Shabbat as a community.
